Super "e"

I know that many of you have just started back to school & this post will seem a little premature...but I have been in school for 6 weeks & we are ready to go! :)
This week I am teaching about the super e.
So, here is how I introduced the lesson during our word study block...
I started with this super e video that my kiddos LOVED!

I then showed them some examples of words that change by adding a super e.
After that, it was up to them...
I gave them a strip of pictures, they cut them apart, glued them into their word study notebooks, and wrote the words being sure to add the super e!
Here is what the journals looked like...

Every kid got slightly different words so that they had to really stretch the words & spell them without being a cheatey Petey. :)
They did such a great job!!

What's even better is that I saw them trying out the skill during writer's workshop & they were so happy that they knew this super e trick!

If you want a copy of the pictures that I used for the activity you can find it on my Facebook page under the freebie tab!

Yay!! Have a super hump day tomorrow!!

This Week in Math...

I know that I have posted about math centers already this week but, those were the centers that I did LAST week.

Remember me, the one who is trying to get caught up on posting stuff??

Anywho~
in 1st grade we are really hitting CCSS 1.OA(represent & solve problems using addition & subtraction) really hard!
We have been introducing & using MANY different representations to solve equations.
So...you know me...
I just had to make some math centers to help us along!
Here they are...

This one is counting on. They start at the given number & count on using the markers on the card. After they figure it out they record their equations & answers on the sheet & color the marker to match the color on the card. Easy peasy!

Here they are writing equations that are represented on a tens frame. They pick a card, record the equation in the correct place, & solve it.

This is my trickiest center...I don't know if you are familiar with math mountains- they are kinda the same as number bonds. Anyway~ they have to trace the mountain to match the mountain on the card. Then, they write the given numbers & solve for the unknown number.

Number Line addition. They choose a number line, write the equation that is represented,  & solve.

So, there you have it, FOUR representations that are kid friendly & that my firsties are finding success with!

Yay!!

I must say that there is nothing fancy about them. They're just plain, simple, & straightforward math centers. If you were looking for cute, it's just not in this one...sorry!

With that being said...

I'm feeling generous...

you want a copy of them??

You can have them for free! Woo hoo!
Just leave me a comment with your email & I will send them out to ya!

But hurry...I'm only sending them out to those of you that comment before I get home from school on Thursday (8/15)!!
HURRY!!!

Oh, No! Time is up! So sorry you missed it...maybe next time!! :)

More Random Room Pics..

Hi everyone!!
Lots of randomness ahead...get ready!!
Like I said yesterday, I am trying to get my blog all caught up....
I have been meaning to post these room pictures for a while, but 1st grade has been CUH-Razy!
Anyway~ I posted some classroom pics HERE & I wanted to post a few others that are around my room...
We really focus on rules & being good citizens the first few weeks of school (who doesn't??). To wrap up the the unit we made this bulletin board as a class. I hung our rules & our "good citizens" chart. Then the kids each drew a rule on an index card to go on the board. It turned out seriously cute! They really got into making those cards!!

This is a shot of my listening center & reading bulletin board...

Here is my writing center....

I just love my sink area with the zebra rug & mirror! It makes me smile! :)
Here is my door. I love the banner!! It is from April at Wolfelicious!

This was a phonics activity that I thought turned out too cute!

This was a super fun activity from this packet by First Grade Fever By Christie...
First Grader at Last! Back-to-School Unit
Sorry the picture is blurry...just click the link to get there!

Okay~ randomness over...
Let me know if you have any questions/comments!!

Back To School Math Fun!

 Hello Everyone!!
I have been REALLY behind on posting so I am trying to get all caught up!
Here is a little glimpse at the math centers that I used last week.

This subtraction center has them matching up the picture cards to the equation cards. After all the matches are made they have to record the info on the recording sheet & figure out the answer.

Here they are filling in the missing number in the sequence. The missing number can be at the beginning, middle, or end. This one was more challenging than I thought it would be but they did it!

This was a favorite...they thought they were so fancy because they know how to count on from 10! After they filled in the values for each card, they had to color the item that was the greatest.

They were REALLY good at this one! They had to fill in the numbers for each school supply & then record the result.

If you like what you see, you can get these & a couple of more centers in this little packet! (click the pic)
You can rest assured that all the centers have been tested in  my first grade class & they were all awesome!!
I wouldn't put anything out there that I hadn't field tested first! :)

Have a marvelous Monday!!

Rules are Cool!

I love the this little rules chant...

Rules, rules they are so cool!
They help us to be safe at school!

I'm not sure where it came from, but I have been using it every year that I have been teaching. If you know the source please let me know so that I can give credit where credit is due!

Anyway~ rules at school, at home, & in the community has been our focus for the last week.
So, I made this little booklet as a quick assessment piece.
I just love how they turned out!
My kids really got into this!!

She wrote "doing chores" for the home rule & "respect others" for the school rule.

Her community rule is "no throwing trash".

Like I said, it made a great & meaningful assessment piece.
I also loved that every kid's booklet was different!

Well, do you want a copy for yourself?
Ok, no sweat! :)

Here you go....

I copied the pages back to back, folded it in 1/2, & wa-lah I had only used one piece of paper!

Enjoy!!
